What actually happens in a first counselling session

Nervous about your first session? Here's what to expect, in plain terms — from the moment you arrive to how we decide what happens next.

If you’ve never had counselling before, the first session can feel like the biggest unknown of all. Here’s the honest version of what happens — no surprises.

You don’t have to arrive with the right words. That’s what the hour is for.

Before we start

There’s nothing to prepare. You don’t need to have worked out what’s “really” wrong, or rehearsed your story. Turning up is enough.

The first few minutes

We’ll settle in, and I’ll explain how I work, what confidentiality means (and its limits), and answer any questions. This is also where we cover the practical things — timing, frequency, fees — so nothing feels murky.

The rest of the hour

Then it’s over to you. Some people arrive with something specific; others just start talking and see where it goes. Both are completely fine. My job is to listen closely, follow your lead, and help you feel a little less alone with whatever you’re carrying.

How we decide what’s next

At the end, there’s no pressure to commit. We’ll simply notice how it felt, and you can take your time deciding whether to continue. If it’s not the right fit, I’ll happily help you find someone who is.

Curious but not sure you’re ready? The free 20-minute intro call is an even gentler place to start. You can also read more in our FAQ.

Take the first step

Not sure where to start? That’s exactly what the first call is for.

A free, no-pressure 20-minute conversation to see whether we’re a good fit. No commitment, no jargon — just a chance to ask what’s on your mind.
